ENGLISH - WORD


WORD

A letter or a group of letters which gives definite meaning is called a word.

Single letter word                   I,   a,   O
Double letter words                to, in, is
Three letter words                   eat, see, raw
Longest word in English         flaccipausinausiinihilibilification

TYPES OF WORDS
1.      Synonyms       [words having similar meaning eg., see=look=glance=glare=….]
2.      Antonyms       [words having opposite meaning to the given word. Eg.beautiful x ugly
3.      Homophones   [words having similar pronunciation eg., see – sea,  rite – right –write]
4.      Homonyms      [a single word giving many meanings eg., post=1. Vacancy, 2.enter, ….]
5.      Confusing words [these words confuse eg. Water-waters,  China-china…]
6.      Compound words[two words combination, eg. Blackboard, walkingstick…]
7.      Idioms             [the phrase which gives a different meaning, eg., once in a blue moon]
8.      Phrases            [the combination two or more words eg. In lieu of]
9.      One word substitutes[
10.  Acronyms        [ an abbreviation used as a word eg., LASER-laser…]
11.  Prefix words   [words formed by prefix, eg., poly-  polygamy, polynomial, ….]
12.  Suffix words   [words formed by suffix eg., -cide  suicide, matricide, uxoricide…]
13.  Reduplicate words
14.  Words made from proper nouns[Sandwich –sandwich,  Boycott – boycott]
15.  Abridged words          [president – prez,  husband – hub…]
16.  Combined and abridged words          [foreign + exchange = forex]
17.  Imported words          [ab initio, ad hoc, ghee, …]
